Outfit: California Dreaming in Paisley und Vans

California Dreaming Outfit Vans

One would think that after one or two hours on the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway No. 1, eyes and soul have gotten used to this view. The coastal road passes lonely beaches, cliff lines and rock spurs for miles and miles, and we’ve been going since the wee morning hours. But still: Everytime we return to the ceaseless views of the sea from a small side trip to the inland, my heart jumps for joy and my eyes water for the same reason, from disbelief and from constantly squinting against the sun.

This inland, by the way, is not less impressive than the coastal line: Bright green meadows, rolling hills and vineyards farther in – but that’s not what we strive for today. We want bright blues, and that’s exactly what we get, both from the stares up to the sky and down to the sea. Our first stop was dedicated to the surfer dudes in Half Moon Bay, we sat down in front of Moonside Bakery to feast our empty stomachs on eggs and orange juice, only a few hours later we stopped again to spoil them even more with a good piece of American Cheesecake in sweet little Carmel. A coffee under the California sun, it doesn’t get much better – but we feel we need to move on.

The 17-Mile Drive is calling for us. It’s 10$ to drive on this exclusive piece of coastal highway, we giggle something a bit less cheesy than YOLO and pull a wrinkled bill out of our purses. The money is long forgotten once we realize we made it into a nice little paradise full of deserted beaches, that we paid for a funny peek into the lives of the rich and carefree (but wait a minute, aren’t we two of them in this very moment?) and for this very happy hour beyond any price.

Obviously, the California sun allowed for us to show bare legs for the first time this year, and what’s better than to pair them with the oh-so-surfer-and-skater Slip On classic this season? They are back, and I’m all in. I got this pair of white checkerboard classics and – in pleasant anticipation of summer – converted the mic patch given to me for customization into an ice cream cone.

Vans – besides Converse, of course – used to be my go-to shoe a good ten years ago, back when my wardrobe changed from wannabe skatergirl into emo-goth, and later on made space for other choices. A few years ago, Celine brought the Slip On back into fashion and made it a real trend item – and now it’s back for good, the original Vans Slip On, I high five the brand for it and am undoubtedly happy that by now, we know better than to only pair them with baggy pants. In this case, I matched them with a sweater dress from Mango with a grey and white paisley print I live in on such days: 25 degrees, a breeze from the sea, salt in the air and dudes surfing the waves right in front of me. California is meeting all cliches – but since they’re nothing but good ones, they make me oh so happy.
