Welcome to Miami, bienvenidos a Miami: Die Sand- und Salzwasserkur in Miami Beach

The cure for anything is saltwater: Sweat, tears or the sea.

Dos & Don’ts in Miami Beach

Also, geh hin, schau ihn dir an, lach dich kaputt – und dann bleibe ihm fortan fern.

Don’t Shop til‘ you drop.

The cure for anything is saltwater: Sweat, tears or the sea. Isak Dinesen was so right with those words; maybe it even is the combination of all of it, sweat, tears and the sea, maybe you need all of this to deal with certain things. Running (away), crying bittersweet tears of grief, sorrow and anger and going to the oceanside, that’s what always helps. Having your favorite person by your side while running into the sea, having them wipe away your tears with a smile, chances are high you will get out of it all safe and sound.

I didn’t have anything to say in the last two weeks up to now, realizing that the past 24 hours in Miami reminded me that there are people and places who and which make you forget your worries without ignoring them, who make everything easier just by their existence. Miami Beach is one of them, and against all clichés about Florida as a holiday destination, I can totally recommend it for a trip with your BFFs if you consider a few dos and don’ts.

What to do in Miami Beach

Do Pack only the absolute necessary – my beach bag still contains nothing but exactly these Beach Essentials. I just recently added my now beloved travel-proof sun hat from Stetson* due to my high risk of sunstrokes and besides that you won’t need anything but a bikini, two or three sundresses and a scarf for excessively air-conditioned hotel lobbies.

Don’t Hit the Ocean Drive. Well, go there, have a look, take a laugh – and then avoid it. South Beach is such a beautiful place, but the Ocean Drive itself is nothing but a crowded, touristy and loud area.

Do Instead, sit down at the DiLido Beach Club a bit north of it all, just by the promenade and enjoy the view of the sea. That saltwater thing works optically, as well – and with a properly garnished Martini in your hand.

Don’t Shop til‘ you drop. Yes, the shops on Lincoln road are alluring and compared to all those American malls you might be used to it’s pretty beautiful, but: Shopping is so bad on your vaca budget…

Do …and you’re way better off investing your money in good food and luscious drinks. One of the nicest places to eat, as I’ve experienced so far, is Restaurant Michael Schwartz at phenomenally beautiful Raleigh Hotel, a true favorite. Or at the enchanting Skybar of Shore Club Hotel. Or, as recommended by Lina, at the Broken Shaker.

Don’t Bury your head in the sand and become red as a lobster. Yes, enjoy the beach life – but move your ass and take walks as well! Discover the side streets and eat a pizza at the cheap but fantastic Italian place around the corner. Rent a bike and drive along the boardwalk. And: Wear sunscreen. Loads of it.

And my absolute favorite Do: Stand still midway on the wooden planks of the boardwalk. Raise your head up and look into the Florida-blue sky. Celebrate your own fabulous life – and know that everything is gonna be alright. Here in Miami or soon, someplace else in this wonderful world.
